Become a History Center Volunteer

Our volunteers are a valuable asset to the History Center. We have volunteer opportunities for our events, activities, light maintenance of the historic structures, guided tours, special projects, and more!

Gainesville Reads Tutoring

Empower a child with the skills to be a confident reader by becoming volunteer tutor for our free children’s reading program, Gainesville Reads. Tutoring session take place once per week for one hour on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4:30-5:30 PM at the History Center.

Veteran Speaker

Must be a military Veteran. You will visit schools and speak to classes about your military experiences. Must be comfortable with children and speaking to large groups.

Educational Programs

Prepare and conduct activities for Family Days (every second Sunday of the month), help set up and break down. Must work well with children, work semi-independently to develop content with direction in a team environment.

Administrative Assistance

Help with the various "behind the scenes" tasks of running a museum. Work the front desk on an as-needed basis, set up and break down for events, and other tasks.

Events Assistance

Help planning and preparation for large events and programs. May include food preparation and presentation, greeting guests, seating assistance, set up and breakdown.

Carpentry

Help us build exhibit cases, benches, easels, and other needs. Must be skilled in construction and woodworking.

Living History Interpretation

Must have previous living history interpretation experience or related experience. Volunteer as an interpreter for our on-site events. Safely demonstrate historic tools, objects, weapons. Must be comfortable speaking to large crowds.
